In an effort to keep students reading over the summer months, we are happy to share that we are continuing our “Dream Big” reading program that we believe will help us achieve this goal. This program will be based on the work of Nell Duke and Ellin Oliver Keene and the research of “No More Summer Reading Loss”. Additionally, many components will be utilized from the many research studies completed by Dr. Jimmy Kim. Your child will receive free books in the mail throughout the summer that have been chosen specifically for him/her based on interest and reading level. Together with your child, he/she will fill out a short reading response on a postcard, send it back to us, and another book will be sent home. By the end of the summer, if every postcard has been returned, your child will have received 10 FREE BOOKS!
The goals of our summer reading program are to:
The goals of our summer reading program are to:
- Encourage students to become lifelong readers.
- Teach students how to think critically about what they’re reading.
- Expose students to different authors, characters, and genres that they may not typically choose themselves.
- Help students develop reading skills through different types of reading experiences. The packs of books we’ll be sending home with each child this summer will allow you the opportunity to spend quality time with your child while also strengthening his or her reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking and conversation skills.
